Information on College Chess Scholarships
A 2007 independent report ranked Chess Academy as one of the top three SES providers for math in Chicago. Students in the Chess Academy 2006-07 program made math gains of 23% on the ISAT Test. This year, in the 2008-09 program, a sample group of 75 students at one of our schools demonstrated a 26% gain in reading and a 24% gain in mathematics. This will be our 4th year as an SES Provider.

Chess Academy Tutoring (Ho Math and Chess of Illinois) is an innovative and successful tutoring program that specializes in teaching reading and math for students in grades 1-8. Research shows that chess as a learning tool raises overall grades and test scores. Chess Academy offers a complete and interactive reading and mathematics curriculum that uses chess as a learning tool. Our goal is to improve students’ problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills in the areas of logic, pattern recognition, perception, coordination, spatial relations, decision-making, and visualization. We provide individualized tutoring for each student with a low student-teacher ratio of 10:1 and 60 hours of instruction. Our program offers bilingual instruction in Spanish and several other languages and fully accommodates all students with disabilities or Limited English Proficiency.
